Optical Lab Technician Level 1

Immediate Supervisor: Optical Supervisor
General Summary: A nonexempt position responsible for Set-up, operation, and basic maintenance
of t equipment within the in-house optical lab.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform proper efficient and productive use of the lensometer for the purposes of lens product
inspection respective of basis lens power requirements.
- Ability to perform equipment maintenance including but not limited to that of wheel & motor/spindle
change.
- Ability to interpret eyeglass orders and lab destinations for order completion. “Special Rx” may require
assistance from the supervisor to translate Rx requirements into a finished product.
- Maintaining and managing lab supply inventories.
- Ability to troubleshoot production problems leading to unacceptable spoilage, production slowdowns, and
sub-par product quality/service and advise supervisor of same and offer possible solutions.
- Tasks required to perform at an acceptable level include but not be limited to; interpretation of Rx,
performing production operations on lab equipment in accordance with established procedures, performing
basic/routine maintenance of assigned equipment, ability to troubleshoot malfunctioning equipment, and
advising supervisor as to possible remedy, Lens wash & surface/cosmetic inspection, Tool Cutting and
selection/replacement, Equipment set up for daily production in accordance with delivery/shipping.
- Performs daily, weekly, and quarterly calibration of equipment and maintenance of calibration log sheets
as directed by the area supervisor.
- Maintains the work area and common areas of the department in a neat, clean, and organized condition.
- Willingly assists others as necessary to keep work current, meet deadlines, or maintain an even
workload. Cooperates with other employees and demonstrates a good attitude. Performs an acceptable
quantity and quality of work on time as required.
Education:
- High school diploma, some college or postsecondary optical lab training preferred.
Experience:
- Minimum three years of clinical experience, preferably in an optical laboratory or department. The
company is willing to train and/or supply training material.

The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by
this job include close vision and color vision.

- Knowledge of use and maintenance of laboratory equipment and instruments.
- Knowledge of safety, infection control, and quality assurance policies and regulations.

- Skill in proper use, preventive maintenance, and repair.
- Skill in appropriate quality control and confidentiality procedures.

Abilities:
- Ability to exercise independent judgment, problem solve, make decisions, and use discretion in
reporting/distributing results.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with patients, families, and staff.
- Ability to organize workload effectively and work quickly with a high level of accuracy using
manual/finger dexterity and eye–hand coordination.
Equipment Operated:
- Standard edging laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
Work Environment:
- Laboratory unit, well-lighted and temperature-controlled. Exposure to chemicals, communicable diseases,
biohazards, and other conditions related to medical setting.
Mental/Physical Requirements:
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand or sit and use
hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee occasionally is required to twist,
turn, or bend. The employee is rarely required to kneel/squat and rarely reach above shoulders.
